A diagnostic assessment is an essential first step in evaluating why someone is experiencing learning difficulties. All students are assessed thoroughly by our specially trained assessor before participating in the STARS programme.

Our qualified LDANZ registered assessor is a NZCER (New Zealand Council for Education Research) approved Level C test user and able to administer the WJIV test battery. A diagnostic assessment gives insight into a student’s learning profile. The assessment report provides individually tailored recommendations and a learning plan for remedial intervention and school accommodations. For secondary and tertiary students an assessment can provide information required by NZQA for special conditions during NCEA examinations. This may include having a reader and/or writer, a computer or more time during examinations. More information about SAC (Special Assessment Conditions) can be found on the Ministry of Education’s website here.

STARS is a member organisation of LDANZ (Learning Disabilities Association of New Zealand)

A message from our friendly student assessor, Ronélle Muller:

My personal experience with students I have assessed over the years (across a wide age spectrum) is that students often leave the testing venue feeling empowered and with a more positive and optimistic outlook regarding their future.

Every student comes with their own unique set of strengths and learning differences. Our assessment system, the Woodcock-Johnson IV psycho-educational test battery, provides standardised and internationally recognised cognitive and achievement testing for students referred for assessment of observed learning difficulties. The WJ IV systems focuses on the evaluation of relative strengths and weaknesses. This is an excellent tool to help assessment professionals identify and describe patterns of performance across achievement, language, and cognitive domains which are key to diagnosing learning problems and developing targeted interventions for individual needs.
